The Old Town and the Sea. A Contribution to Scientific Explorations
Abstract
In the presented text I attempt to recognize and describe the relationship between the city and the sea in the history of civilization and culture, juxtaposing these entities in a metaphorical order, looking at the city in a metaphorical comparative approach, at the same time going beyond categorical assignments and classification distinctions. In this combination, I am looking for a reflective space in which the vision of the city (in the adopted perspective) crystallizes as a place for people, a place whose conditions are determined by the proximity of nature and the sea. A natural curiosity. A reservoir of food and abstraction. Because the sea/ocean connects and transforms nature, geography and experience. It both unites and divides people. It generates cultural patterns. Ocean, sea – as a construct. A cultural scenario embedded in customs, literature, painting, tourism, work, iconosphere. A sea of stories. The grand narrative on which ships, individuals and communities sail and drift; caravels and tankers, lifeboats, pirates, refugees, pearl divers, legions of researchers and swaths of civilizational garbage. On the way to the port. From port to port. Eternal sine-cosine.

Abstrakt
W prezentowanym tekście podejmuję próbę rozpoznania i opisu relacji między miastem i morzem w historii cywilizacji i kultury, dokonując zestawienia tych bytów w porządku metaforycznym, przyjrzenia się miastu w metaforycznej komparatystyce, wychylając się jednocześnie poza kategorialne przyporządkowania, klasyfikacyjne dystynkcje. Poszukuję w tym zestawieniu refleksyjnej przestrzeni, w której krystalizuje się widzenie miasta (w przyjętej optyce) jako miejsca dla ludzi, miejsca, którego warunki określa bliskość natury, morza. Przyrodniczego kuriozum. Rezerwuar pożywienia i abstrakcji. Bo morze/ocean spina i przeobraża przyrodę, geografię i doświadczenie. Zarówno łączy, jak i dzieli ludzi. Generuje kulturowe wzorce. Ocean, morze – jako konstrukt. Kulturowy scenariusz wpisany w zwyczaje, literaturę, malarstwo, turystykę, pracę, ikonosferę. Morze opowieści. Wielka narracja, po której żeglują i dryfują statki, jednostki i wspólnoty; karawele i tankowce, łodzie
ratunkowe, piraci, uchodźcy, poławiacze pereł, zastępy badaczy i połacie cywilizacyjnych śmieci. W drodze do portu. Z portu do portu. Wiecznym Sinus-cosinus.
